Damien knocked on Hector’s front door and let himself in.

Hector had his feet up on his sofa, drinking a huge mug of coffee and reading a doorstep of a novel.

‘What are you reading, Hector?’

‘There’s no point telling you, Damien, because you wouldn’t understand anyway. It’s a book about philosophy and how it links ancient Germany to ancient Greece.’

‘It sounds like double Dutch to me!’

Hector groaned and rolled his eyes. ‘If you want a coffee, there is plenty in the machine in the kitchen.’

Damien made his way to the kitchen, whistling tunelessly. He knew that was one of Hector’s few pet hates. ‘You should have been a woman, Herman!’ he called across the hut. ‘This kitchen is far too tidy for a single bloke.’

‘Dummkopf.’

Both men chuckled, and Hector looked up at Damien as he returned from the kitchen. He closed his book and placed it on the table in front of the sofa.

‘No bookmark, mate?’

‘No need…SMG trick. You should try it one day.’

‘Funny. Is that an SMG trick too?’

‘What?’ Hector crossed his arms, waiting for something sarcastic.

Damien sipped his coffee and slowly nodded his head in approval. ‘Being a woman magnet.’

‘Dummkopf.’

‘You know damn well that Hollie looks at you in a…certain way.’ Damien sat forwards, not letting his eyes drop away from Hector’s face.

‘Is that a ginger thing?’

‘What?’

‘Being stupid.’ Hector tried hard not to smile but didn’t quite succeed. ‘Of course, someone as senior and important as the bishop wouldn’t be having the time to be looking for a boyfriend never mind a lowly new person as me.’

‘Hector, you’re flustered, mate. I know you are ’cause what you said just now wasn’t up to your normal English.’ Damien took another sip of his coffee. ‘What’s her job got to do with her private life? Everyone has time off, and come on, she is high up in the SMG so will be able to make new time to use.’

‘Has Nancy put you up to this? Or Maxine?’

‘What are you talking about, mate?’

‘Trying to interrogate me about a lady.’

‘Glad you said lady there, Herman. Hollie is definitely a lady.’ Damien grinned. No way am I going to let you off the hook here, Hector. ‘After sadly seeing your daughter’s funeral and finding out that your beloved Ehefrau had passed away, time has passed by, and I think you’re at peace with yourself enough to move forward to a new stage in life. Not move on, move forward.’ His grin mellowed into a supportive warm smile.

Hector sat back and visibly relaxed, his shoulders lowering as the tension drained away. Buying time, he drained his coffee and watched as it refilled by itself. He allowed himself a self-satisfied smile. I doubt that Damien can do that trick yet!

Damien winked at him and looked down into his mug. Full of coffee. ‘You didn’t think I could do that, did you?’

‘Of course I knew you could.’

‘Whatever. I can also tell that Hollie is impressed with you. You should ask her out for dinner.’

‘Newdon Nando’s? No way. I am not good enough to even think about it, Damien.
